Abilify

There is a constant debate over the usage of Abilify for the pregnant women. According to some tests and reports, usage of this medication is not safe during pregnancy, while there is another section that believes the drug does not affect adversely. However, the number of believers that opines not to use Abilify during pregnancy is high because many studies were conducted on animals that have shown that the drug increased the possibilities of birth defects and even miscarriage.

In fact, the risk factor associated with using this drug is not overruled by the Food and Drug Association of US (FDA). FDA maintains a grouping system for the specific medications that can cause possible harm to the fetuses, during pregnancy. This system is termed as the Pregnancy Category C. Medicines under this category indicates that it is not safe to consume such drugs during pregnancy as those drugs have not undergone any studies on pregnant women or animals. However, there are certain organizations that have conducted test on pregnant rats with these medications. The results have shown less fertility than normal and also resulted in skeletal birth defects and miscarriages. Usage of Abilify on some pregnant rats also resulted in undescended testicles, slow development and low birth weight.

It is also important to know that the impact of same medication on animals and humans vary in a big way. It implies Abilify might not cause such adverse effects on pregnant women as it does with certain animals. If the health experts or doctors believe that this medicine can be prescribed to a would-be mother without causing any harm or threat to the unborn child, they can suggest the drug to be consumed. However, no one should dare to take the medication during pregnancy, without informing the doctor.
